PHARMACY TECHNICIAN DIPLOMA PROGRAM

At High Desert Medical College, our Pharmacy Technician training program is designed to prepare students for a pharmacy career in the health care industry. Pharmacy technicians are responsible for helping licensed pharmacists, by assisting in measuring, mixing, counting, labeling, and recording the correct dosages of prescription medications. Pharmacy Technicians are also responsible for establishing and maintaining patient record files, submitting insurance claim forms, and managing prescription and over-the-counter medication inventories. This 34-week program provides students with intensive training to learn the skills needed for entry-level employment as Pharmacy Technicians, and students receive real-world on-the-job experience through an Externship.

Students in the Pharmacy Technician program learn the skills to:

  • Fill prescriptions under the direct supervision of a pharmacist
  • Utilize relevant software applications
  • Recognize the classifications of drugs and scheduled drugs
  • Understand brand, generic, and OTC (over the counter) medications
  • Adhere to HIPAA privacy regulations
  • Comprehend and perform insurance procedures

Graduates receive a Certificate of Completion, Pharmacy Technician diploma, and receive their California state licensure from the Board of Pharmacy.* Pharmacy Technicians hold jobs with career opportunities in retail pharmacies, hospital pharmacies, pharmacy laboratories, compounding pharmacies, and as pharmaceutical sales representatives.

*Licensing by the California State Board of Pharmacy requires fingerprinting, criminal background check, and official High School/GED transcripts to be submitted with the State Board of Pharmacy application. This process may take 45 days to process after graduating from the program.
